Apple released its "Commitment to Customer Privacy" statement recently, stating that their customer's use of iMessage and FaceTime are protected by end-to-end encryption where even they (Apple) can not decrypt the data.

What kind of protection can companies offer and do their customers even care? Or is this some kind of lip service for the minority to shut up about privacy and security?
